SUMMARY

The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment, installing, maintaining, and repairing water and sewer infrastructure, and assisting with the maintenance of streets within the jurisdictional boundaries of the City of Siloam Springs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

1. Oversee repair, installation and maintenance of water and sewer infrastructure.

2. Operate required equipment to clean out sewer lines including but not limited to the jetter trailer and combination jetter/vacuum truck.

3. Ensure the proper maintenance of the equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment prior to and after use.

4. Drive trucks of various sizes for the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, gravel, and sand.

5. Operating the heavy equipment such as large excavators and dozers. Also operating backhoes, wheel loader, skid loaders, dump trucks, mini excavators, and other equipment as needed.

6. Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor.

7. Performs unskilled manual labor, as necessary, in a variety of maintenance and construction projects within the Water/Wastewater Division.

8. Perform mowing functions as necessary.

9. Perform all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.

10. Perform required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of leading a crew including, but not limited to; pavement cutting, ditch digging, main and pipe repair, pipe laying, backfilling, and clean up.

11. Ability to read and interpret blueprints.

12. Ensure public safety and health by performing duties to established standards.

13. Repair or replace meters and meter boxes.

14. GPS lines and fittings for sewer and water.

15. Vacuum restroom vaults at the Kayak Park and City Lake.

16. Maintain lift stations including work on the electrical control panel.

17. Completes required on-going training to maintain Water Distribution License.

18. Performs other related duties as required or assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school Diploma or general education degree (GED); two (2) years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral diagram or schedule form.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS (if required)

Must hold a Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment. Must obtain a class III Water Distribution Certification within 18 months of employment.

While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is exposed to outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat, cold, wet or humid conditions (non-weather related). The incumbent works in high precarious places, near moving mechanical parts, and is at risk of electrical shock and/or vibration. The incumbent is exposed to fumes and /or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
